Having chickens around the yard used to be a staple of American living – up through the 1940s and even into the 1950s, it wasn't uncommon for households – even in urban areas – to have a couple of chickens in a coop in the back yard to provide eggs for breakfast in the morning. The push for modernity swept that side, but it's a practice that's making a comeback.

Keeping your chickens healthy is a fair bit of work, but not any kind of tedious work. The biggest concern is giving your chickens a comfortable and healthy place to live; one option is a safe and secure portable chicken coop.

While there are more extensive and larger immobile coops, portable ones have some advantages. You can relocate them at a whim – for example, if they're getting into trouble because of other birds or animals in the neighborhood. Or maybe you need to shift the coop farther from the house to cut down on the noise.

A mobile coop can be moved by one person and in under an hour. A larger coop can be an all weekend affair in some cases. This can be handy, if, for example, you're entertaining in the back yard and need to wheel the birds into the garage so that they're not underfoot or causing a distraction.

Most mobile chicken coops have wheels or runners that attach to the bottom of the legs; they range in capacity from four to six bird coops all the way to ones that can handle a dozen hens or more. Most of them can be painted or decorated to blend in with your back yard appearance as well, without becoming an eye sore.

When picking a chicken coop house, you've got lots of choices for color, and they can be repainted pretty easily – and the birds won't care what color the coop is at all – they just care that it's warm and enclosed. You do need to make sure that you have space for all your birds, including probable expansions. It's usually better to buy one a little larger than you need, just to cover that eventuality.

Once you get the chicken house coop, it's just a matter of getting its occupants, and soon you'll be enjoying fresh eggs every morning.
